MCT TO PROVIDE FREE SUMMER YOUTH PASSES FOR 22,000 STUDENTS

Free Summer Bus Passes for 7th through 12th Grade Students in Madison County

GRANITE CITY, ILL., May 1, 2008 . . . At a time when fuel prices are at their highest, with no sign of relief, Madison County Transit (MCT) will provide FREE MCT Summer Youth Passes to more than 22,000 Madison County students in the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades. The Youth Passes will provide the pass-holder with unlimited rides from Memorial Day to Labor Day 2008 on any MCT fixed route bus. The passes will be distributed along with a “how to ride” brochure through public and private schools in the next few weeks. MCT is one of the first public transportation agencies in the country to initiate this type of aggressive program to promote transit use to students.

“This is an educational initiative,” said MCT Managing Director Jerry Kane. “Young people in Madison County need to know their transportation options, and we believe the Youth Pass will be an excellent teacher.” To encourage students to take full advantage of the free rides afforded by the Youth Pass, MCT is hosting a scavenger hunt known as “Operation MCT” in conjunction with the Youth Pass campaign. Questions regarding landmarks along MCT bus routes will be posted on bus cards in the buses. Students will board the bus, read the question and ride various routes to find the answer. To enter, students mail their responses to MCT’s main office, or visit the Summer Youth Pass webpage, located at www.mct.org. Respondents with the correct answers will be entered into a drawing for one of two free Apple iPods.

“With MCT’s continued efforts to improve mobility, Madison County is poised to be a leader in the region for reducing our area’s fuel consumption and improving air quality,” said Madison County Board Chairman Alan Dunstan. “There has never been a better time for us to encourage transportation alternatives.”

MCT Summer Youth Passes have been available since 2004 at a cost of $10 to $20 per pass. In the last four years, an increasing number of students have purchased the pass. Last year, Youth Pass holders accounted for more than 3,700 trips on MCT fixed route buses. For details, visit www.mct.org or call 618-931-7433, Option #3.

Madison County Transit (MCT) enhances the mobility of the St. Louis region by providing multi-modal transportation services. For elderly and disabled residents who are unable to use the fixed-route buses, MCT provides paratransit bus service. MCT is also responsible for the construction and maintenance of more than 85 miles of scenic Madison County bikeways known as the MCT Trails, as well as overseeing RideFinders, the St. Louis region’s FREE carpooling and vanpooling program.
