MCT KICKS OFF SUMMER YOUTH PASS PROGRAM

Free Summer Youth Passes for Madison County 7th-12th Graders in its Third Year

GRANITE CITY, ILL., JUNE 1, 2010 . . . Beginning today, more than 20,000 Madison County students will have the opportunity to ride Madison County Transit (MCT) buses for free all summer long with the 2010 MCT Summer Youth Pass in hand. For the third year in a row, MCT distributed free Summer Youth Passes to all Madison County students in the 7th through 12 grades, providing unlimited rides on MCT’s fixed-route bus system from Memorial Day to Labor Day. To kick-off this year’s program, MCT Board Chairman Dan Corbett, Madison County Assistant Regional Superintendent of Schools Andrew Reinking, Granite City Superintendent of Schools Harry Briggs, MCT Managing Director Jerry Kane and other officials ceremonially gave 2010 Summer Youth Passes to a group of high school students at a kick-off event today at Granite City High School.

For the last month, MCT Youth Passes were delivered to participating public and private schools in the Madison County Transit District along with a “how to ride” brochure. Last summer, Madison County students riding with a Summer Youth Pass accounted for more than 60,000 boardings on MCT fixed- route buses. Students used the pass to attend summer classes, summer jobs, pools, parks, malls, and other recreation areas.

“The MCT Summer Youth Pass program continues to be an important tool in educating young people about using public transportation in Madison County,” said MCT Managing Director Jerry Kane. “I applaud the MCT Board of Trustees for extending this program and look forward to another successful year.”

The MCT Summer Youth Pass allows students to learn firsthand how to ride the MCT bus system while providing them and their families with hassle-free mobility for the summer months. For details on this or other MCT services, please visit www.mct.org or call 618-931-7433, Option #3.

For elderly and disabled residents who are unable to use the fixed-route buses, MCT provides Paratransit curb-to-curb service known as Runabout. MCT is also responsible for the construction and maintenance of nearly 100 miles of scenic Madison County bikeways known as the MCT Trails, as well as overseeing RideFinders, the St. Louis region’s FREE carpooling and vanpooling program.
