MCT Designated Bus Stops

In an effort to create safe and passenger-friendly pick-up and drop-off locations and speed up MCT fixed-routes, MCT is transitioning from a flag stop system to designated bus stops on all fixed-routes.

MCT has already created designated stops on the #1, #1X, #5, #6, #12X, #14X and #16X.
(See below for a complete list of stops by route.) The transition is expected to be complete by 2012, at which time MCT routes will only pick-up and drop-off at designated stops where a MCT Bus Stop Sign is located.

What is a designated stop?
Designated stops are pre-determined locations where MCT buses can safely pick-up and drop-off passengers. “MCT Bus Stop” signs are placed at regular intervals in cities, except where safety or infrastructure makes it impossible to do so. Bus stop signs in Madison County give MCT bus routes a physical presence and help passengers and the community identify both the route on which a bus travels and the locations where it stops.

How do I board a bus with designated stop signs?
Stand near the “MCT Bus Stop” sign. When you see the bus approaching, just wave your hand so the driver knows to pull over. When you’re ready to get off the bus, pull the cord along the window to alert the driver and he or she will pull over at the next designated MCT Bus Stop.

Bus Stops
Three Types of Designated Bus Stops:
(see graphic of MCT Bus Stop Sign configurations above)
  • MCT Bus Stop: Served by MCT local routes in Madison County only.
  • MCT Express Bus Stop: Served by MCT Express routes only.
  • MCT Bus Stop Sign with a Red Express Sub-Sign: Served by both MCT local routes AND MCT Express routes.

Will Every Designated Stop have a Bus Stop Sign?
Almost every designated stop will have a MCT Bus Stop Sign but not every location warrants a sign. For instance, the MCT Bus Stations will not have a Bus Stop Sign nor will most shopping centers. Not all of the MCT Bus Stop locations in Downtown St. Louis have an MCT Express sign. Some of them are labeled with a MCT Bus Stop Sticker on a Metro sign.
