MCT KICKS OFF SUMMER YOUTH PASS PROGRAM
Free Summer Youth Passes for Madison County 7th-12th Graders
GRANITE CITY, ILL., APRIL 28, 2009 . . . More than 20,000 Madison County students will receive a free Madison County Transit (MCT) Summer
Youth Pass again this year, providing them with unlimited rides on MCT’s fixed-route bus system
from Memorial Day to Labor Day. MCT officials ceremonially gave the first 2009 Summer Youth
Passes to a group of high school students at a kick-off event today at Granite City High School.
In the next two weeks, MCT Youth Passes will be delivered to participating public and private
schools in the Madison County Transit District.
In 2008, the first year that Youth Passes were distributed for free, Youth Pass holders riding MCT to
summer classes, summer jobs, pools, parks, malls, and other recreation areas, accounted for more than
65,000 trips on MCT fixed-route buses. The 2009 passes will be distributed along with a “how to ride”
brochure, and MCT staff will be available at high schools throughout Madison County in coming weeks to
answer questions about the bus system. Students will also be eligible to participate in “Operation MCT,”
a county-wide scavenger hunt that requires riding the bus and answering questions. Answers can then be
submitted on-line or by mail for a chance to win a free iPod nano.
“Following the success of last year’s youth pass program and the amount of positive feedback that we received,
the MCT Board decided to make the passes available again this year,” said MCT Managing Director Jerry Kane.
“When these students graduate and obtain employment, we hope that their positive experiences with MCT will
translate into lifelong transit use.”
The MCT Summer Youth Pass is an educational tool that allows students to learn firsthand how to ride the MCT
bus system while providing them and their families with hassle-free mobility for the summer months.
